RELATED INFORMATION
Dendrobium orchids have been among Hawaii’s most popular plants since they were introduced from the Philippines in 1896. They have since become the single most valuable commercial flower in Hawaii. Visitors to the Hawaiian Islands will notice orchids throughout their vacation – they may receive a fresh orchid lei upon arrival, or enjoy a tropical cocktail with a fresh orchid hanging on the lip of their glass.

Carnations debuted as a cultivated flower over 2,000 years ago. While it is known to be grown primarily in the Asia and European areas of the globe, Theophrastus of Ancient Greece had an interest in this flower and described it as dianthis due to its divine texture and overall beauty. Ancient Greece had derived the term carnation from the term coronation and was often found and used in crowns and other ceremonial occasions with flower and leaf garlands.

DURABILITY
Fairly durable.

Length: Hangs about 18 inches from neck when worn (40 inches long before being tied).

Keep dry and refrigerate in bag or container.

RELATED INFORMATION
The tī plant was brought to Hawaii prior to 1778 by the early Polynesians from Tangaroa, Tane, Tī, and Rongo. Hawaiian Ki was considered sacred to the Hawaiian god, Lono, and to the goddess of the hula, Laka. It symbolized high rank and divine power. The leaves were used by the kahuna priests in ancient rituals as protection from evil spirits.

Brought to Hawaii in the early 1800s, the rose has been an integral part of lei making in Hawaii ever since, used frequently as accents in both traditional haku leis as well as more contemporary orchid leis. The red lokelani or cottage rose is the Island of Maui’s official flower – the only non-native plant to be recognized as the official flower of any of the Hawaiian Islands.

RELATED INFORMATION
The tuberose is a night-blooming plant thought to be native to Mexico. It has been cultivated in Hawaii for many years now and has become a very popular lei making flower here. Its scent is described as a complex, exotic, sweet floral.

Brought to Hawaii in the early 1800s, the rose has been an integral part of lei making in Hawaii ever since, used frequently as accents in both traditional haku leis as well as more contemporary orchid leis. The pink lokelani or cottage rose is the Island of Maui’s official flower – the only non-native plant to be recognized as the official flower of any of the Hawaiian Islands.

RELATED INFORMATION
Red ginger was introduced to Hawaii as an ornamental plant around 1928, and is now “naturalized,” meaning that it is reproducing and spreading on its own outside of human cultivation. The “petals” of the red ginger flower are actually bracts, which protect the 1-inch-long white flowers. These petals lay over the white ginger blossoms in the Red Micro Ginger Lei.

Originally from the Himalayas region of Nepal and India, the White Ginger Lily was introduced to Hawaii by early settlers and has since been naturalized. It grows well in the Islands without harm to other species, and is a favorite fragrant flower lei in Hawaii.

The wonderful fragrance of the Awapuhi-Ke’oke’o (white ginger) fills the hiking trails of the lush Hawaiian forests. A native of India, Ginger is believed to be one of the only lei making flowers brought to Hawaii by the early Polynesian voyagers. These delicate flowers are braided Micronesian-style to create a very elegant flat lei.
